Two years ago, the Retreat decided build on their growing reputation for food excellence with guests, aiming beyond the Retreat to establish culinary leadership within the Mackenzie. To enable this we established The Moraine Lodge Supper Club where people who were not staying at the Retreat could come and enjoy new beautifully crafted food experiences. Two years on and our monthly Supper Club events are sought after events that attract foodies, including local chefs, from around NZ.
The Retreat’s cuisine is firmly rooted in 5 key principles: know the provenance of the food we serve and use fresh, local, seasonal produce that is cooked from scratch. The Retreat has a large vegetable garden and particularly in Summer, the tastes of nature are imbued into the dishes we serve. From these underpinnings, our chefs have a blank slate to engage their creativity and experience to create visual and taste sensations. We tell the story of the dishes we serve engaging our guests in a food journey that is memorable and authentic.
This year, we signed up to the South Canterbury Outstanding Food Festival (SCOFF) because it aligns perfectly with our food philosophies and provides an opportunity for the Retreat stand alongside fellow growers, producers and artisan creators to delight foodies. The food was outrageously good - breakfast was tasty and filling, but the evening meals took my breath away. All freshly prepared and locally sourced, Tom obviously takes great pride in his craft, and did not disappoint. Outstanding. Martin W, March 2020
