We created Mt Cook Lakeside Retreat to be a place of beauty, peace, privacy and rest. The clear, starry skies, ancient glacial landscapes, fresh mountain air and vast open spaces of the Aoraki Mount Cook region inspired our wellness philosophy: Celebrate the power of optimism, make time for reflection and cultivate an active, engaged perspective on life.
Our wellness menu draws inspiration from our indigenous land and culture. Our treatments are based on holistic therapies connecting our guests to their Wairua (spirit) and to our natural environment, encouraging a sense of Hauora (wellbeing).

Fantail Spa at Ashley Mackenzie Villa
Guests staying at Ashley Mackenzie Villa have private and exclusive use of Fantail Spa. Named for small native birds, piwakawaka (or fantails) which frequent the area, Fantail Spa’s design captures a harmonious balance of energy and natural elements. Filled with light and open to lake and mountain views, the spa is inviting, warm and welcoming, and includes a sauna, outdoor hot tub, exercise room and massage room.
In-Room Massage Treatments
Our in-room massage treatments offer total relaxation in the privacy of your luxury villa. Like our other wellness offerings, our massage menu draws inspiration from our indigenous land and culture. These treatments are based on holistic therapies connecting our guests to their Wairua (spirit) and to our natural environment, encouraging a sense of Hauora (wellbeing).
Private Yoga Instruction
Our yoga instructor will guide you through private, tailored yoga sessions designed for your personal level of fitness and experience.
Spa Pools Filled with Artesian Water
Each villa at Mt Cook Lakeside Retreat includes its own private spa pool, filled with water drawn from the Retreat’s artesian wells. This clear, pure water comes from the glaciers of Aoraki Mount Cook, not the lake, and is estimated to be 10,000 years old. The water is referred to as “The Tears of Aoraki.”
Tranquil Walks and Forest Bathing
Our estate features beautiful walking tracks, forested and with lake and mountain views. We’ve also created a special track to celebrate the Japanese practice of forest bathing, or shinrin-yoku. This practice focuses on simply being in nature, connecting with it through all our senses and allowing it to help us to be centred and present.
Active Recreation on the Estate
Guests are invited to enjoy the Retreat’s private tennis court, with tennis racquets provided. We also offer petanque, croquet, and an outdoor curling rink in winter.

From the moment we arrived we felt privileged to experience the tranquility and beauty of this luxurious property. The staff were attentive with thoughtful touches ensuring the comfort of our stay. Our Villa was spacious and tastefully furnished with spectacular mountain views from every room including the bathroom. Our delicious evening meal was prepared by Chef Tom from locally sourced ingredients and served in our private dining room. It was beautiful. A wonderful and memorable stay. We will be returning.
