Dark Sky Stargazing

Overview

Moving into the Pukaki Observatory for an interactive stargazing session, you will have hands-on science and space-related materials to touch, as well as different ways to engage with the stars using our 9.25" Celestron SCT telescope and a modern smart telescope. Guided by your Astro Guide using a high-powered laser, explore the southern night sky, taking in constellations, planets, glowing nebulae, and star clusters. 

Throughout the evening, your guide will share stories of modern science and telescopes alongside the deep human connection to dark skies and the stars, including the Māori perspective of the night sky and celestial navigation. You will also discuss how light pollution affects animals, how global skies have become brighter over time, and why protecting the Dark Sky Reserve is so important. Additionally, your guide will explain our on-site fireball meteor tracking cameras, which monitor our skies in the search for New Zealand's next meteorite.

Moon Phase Planning

To view fainter deep space objects like nebulae at their best, we recommend planning your visit around or near a New Moon. A Full Moon looks magnificent through the telescope for viewing lunar details, but its brightness reduces the visibility of fainter astronomical objects. 

Late-Night Scheduling

Scheduled after dinner service year round to take full advantage of the deep, pitch-black night skies. 

Weather Dependency 

Clear skies are required for optical stargazing. We will contact you if weather conditions prevent viewing. Approximately 90 minutes | Year round | Recommended for adults and children aged 12+ | Available to Retreat guests and the general public | Shared and private experiences available
