Our Place

Te Manahuna, A Place of Enlightenment. Lake Pukaki, Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park and the Southern Alps

Overview

Place is fundamental to Mt Cook Lakeside Retreat. The private 66-hectare estate sits on ancient glacial moraine beside Lake Pukaki in Te Manahuna / the Mackenzie Basin, on the doorstep of Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park and the Southern Alps. From the estate, the landscape opens towards Aoraki / Mount Cook and the great peaks of the Southern Alps, while the Ben Ohau Range stretches across the western horizon. This is a landscape shaped by ice, water, wind and time: glacial lakes, mountains, tussock country and skies that seem to stretch without end.

Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park lies at the heart of this alpine environment. Its glaciers, valleys and mountains provide not only an extraordinary backdrop to the Retreat, but opportunities to explore one of New Zealand’s most dramatic natural landscapes. It is also a place that is constantly changing. Morning light moves across Lake Pukaki. Nor’west clouds gather along the Southern Alps. Winter snow transforms the mountains. Summer brings long evenings and dry high-country air. As the sun sets on the Ben Ohau Range, another part of the landscape begins to reveal itself.

Beneath Some of the World’s Darkest Skies

Mt Cook Lakeside Retreat lies within the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, where exceptionally low levels of light pollution allow the night sky to be experienced with remarkable clarity. Here, darkness is as important to the sense of place as the mountains and lake. The purpose-built Pukaki Observatory allows guests to explore the southern night sky with experienced astronomy guides, while careful use of artificial light across the estate helps protect the natural darkness around us. Stargazing is not simply an activity at the Retreat. It is part of living here.

Water from Beneath the Estate

Pure artesian water is drawn from approximately 100 metres beneath the estate. Cool and naturally filtered through the landscape, this water is used throughout the Retreat, from the villas and kitchens to the private hot tubs. Like the dark sky, clean air and open space, it is one of the natural qualities of this place that we value and protect.

Gardens, Food and the Seasons

Our gardens create another connection between the estate and the guest experience. Vegetables, herbs, fruit, berries and edible flowers are grown for our chefs, changing with the seasons and influencing what appears on the menu at The Moraine. Beyond our own gardens, we work with farmers, growers and artisan producers from the Mackenzie and wider South Island whose produce brings the character of the region to the table. Across the estate, walking trails move through gardens, open grassland and regenerating areas, providing places to explore, pause or simply take in the scale of the landscape. This is not simply the setting for Mt Cook Lakeside Retreat. It is the reason the Retreat is here.
