FAQ's About Stargazing
Find answers to some of the most common questions about our stargazing experience.
Where is the Pukaki Observatory & Wine Cellar?
The Observatory is located within Mt Cook Lakeside Retreat in the Mackenzie Basin, approximately 10 minutes' drive from Twizel and around 40 minutes from both Lake Tekapo and Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park.
Guests travelling from outside the Retreat need to provide their own transport.
Can I book stargazing if I am not staying at Mt Cook Lakeside Retreat?
Yes. Dark Sky Stargazing and Dusk to Dark are open to both Retreat guests and visitors staying elsewhere in the region.
Some private experiences, including our Private Astrophotography Masterclass, are available exclusively to guests staying at the Retreat.
How long is a stargazing experience?
Dark Sky Stargazing and Dusk to Dark are approximately 90 minutes.
Is stargazing suitable for children?
Our winter Dusk to Dark experience is designed for families and is suitable for children of all ages.
Our later Dark Sky Stargazing experience is recommended for adults and children aged 12 and over because of its late-night timing.
What will we see?
Every night is different.
Depending on the season, Moon, planets and conditions, you may see the Milky Way, Southern Cross, Magellanic Clouds, planets, nebulae, star clusters, galaxies and other deep-space objects.
Your Astro Guide will select the most interesting objects visible on the night.
Is a New Moon the best time to visit?
A New Moon creates very dark conditions and is particularly good for viewing faint deep-space objects and the structure of the Milky Way.
A Full Moon offers a different experience. Its brightness makes faint objects harder to see, but the Moon itself can be spectacular through a telescope, revealing craters and surface detail.
There is something different to discover throughout the lunar cycle.
What happens if it is cloudy?
Our Astro Guides closely monitor the conditions.
If cloud prevents optical stargazing, we will contact you and give you the option to reschedule, cancel without a cancellation fee, or join our indoor Touch the Stars experience.
What is Touch the Stars?
Touch the Stars takes place within the wine cellar and Observatory when the weather prevents us opening the Observatory to the night sky.
You will still enjoy your welcome drink and handcrafted chocolates, but spend more time exploring astronomy through science demonstrations, historic instruments, space materials and real space rocks.
Discover Māori celestial navigation, modern astronomy, meteorites and our Fireballs 360 meteor tracking system, and spend time talking with your Astro Guide about their own area of expertise.
Can I book a private stargazing experience?
Yes. Private Dark Sky Stargazing experiences can be arranged, subject to availability.
Why is the Aoraki Mackenzie night sky so special?
The Retreat lies within the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, a protected dark-sky area covering more than 4,300 square kilometres.
Its alpine geography, small population and careful management of artificial light create exceptional conditions for astronomy.
From here, the southern sky reveals objects that cannot be seen from much of the Northern Hemisphere, including the Magellanic Clouds and some of the southern sky's most distinctive nebulae and constellations.
How do I book?
