Weddings FAQ

Find answers to some of the most common questions about our wedding experiences.

  • What types of weddings can you host at Mt Cook Lakeside Retreat?

We host elopements, intimate villa weddings, glacier weddings and destination weddings for larger groups. Celebrations can be centred around a private villa, The Moraine or a combination of locations across the estate.

  • Can we get married on a glacier near Aoraki Mount Cook?

Yes. Glacier wedding ceremonies can be arranged by helicopter into the Southern Alps, subject to weather, landing conditions and operational requirements. Our team can help coordinate the experience with experienced local helicopter operators.

  • Can we have our wedding ceremony at a private villa?

Yes. Our villas provide a particularly private setting for elopements and intimate weddings, allowing your accommodation, ceremony and celebration to take place within the same setting.

  • Can we hold our wedding reception at The Moraine?

Yes. The Great Hall at The Moraine is our principal venue for larger wedding celebrations and can accommodate seated receptions for up to 100 guests.

  • Can our wedding guests stay at the Retreat?

Yes. Private villa accommodation is available on the estate for the wedding couple and a limited number of guests. For larger weddings, additional accommodation is available within the wider Mackenzie Region and our team can help with planning.

  • Can we have exclusive use of Mt Cook Lakeside Retreat?

Yes. Exclusive use can be arranged, giving you greater privacy and allowing the estate to become the setting for your wedding celebration and time together with family and friends.

  • Do you host elopements?

Yes. Elopements are an important part of our wedding offering. They can be as simple and private as a ceremony for two or include a small group of family and friends, with accommodation, dining and experiences incorporated into your stay.

  • Can our wedding take place over several days?

Yes. This is one of the advantages of a destination wedding at the Retreat. Your stay can include a welcome dinner, activities and experiences before the wedding, the ceremony and reception, followed by a relaxed breakfast or lunch the next day.

  • What can our guests do during a destination wedding stay?

Guests can walk the estate, play tennis, experience guided stargazing at Pukaki Observatory, explore the wider Mackenzie Region, arrange fly fishing or helicopter experiences, enjoy dining at The Moraine or simply spend time together at the Retreat.

  • What is the best time of year for a wedding at Lake Pukaki?

Weddings can take place throughout the year, with each season creating a very different alpine setting. Summer brings long days, autumn richer colours, winter snow on the surrounding mountains and fireside celebrations, while spring brings fresh growth and changing mountain light.

  • How do we begin planning a destination wedding at Mt Cook Lakeside Retreat?

Start by telling us about the celebration you have in mind — your preferred dates, guest numbers and whether you are considering a villa wedding, glacier ceremony, The Moraine or exclusive use of the Retreat. Our team can then help shape the experience around you.
