Watch The Night Sky Come Alive

Dusk To Dark Stargazing

Watch The Night Sky Come Alive! In winter, darkness arrives early. Dusk to Dark follows that transition, beginning while Aoraki / Mount Cook and the Southern Alps can still be seen in the fading light and continuing as the first stars and planets appear overhead.

Overview

Your Astro Guide will help you identify the first objects emerging in the evening sky and share stories of the stars before moving into the Observatory for an interactive journey through the southern sky. Look through our telescopes, explore science and space materials and discover constellations, planets, nebulae and star clusters as true darkness settles across the Mackenzie Basin.

Designed especially with families in mind, the earlier winter timing allows younger guests to experience the wonder of the Dark Sky Reserve without the very late night. Adults can enjoy a glass of wine or whiskey, while younger astronomers warm up with hot chocolate and marshmallows. Handcrafted chocolates are served for everyone.
